Our facilities.

Human challenge trials usually require highly specialized inpatient facilities. At CCfV, challenge studies take place in the Challenge Unit. Located at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, this facility is the first of its kind in Canada and one of very few worldwide.

The Challenge Unit

  • a hospital bed with monitoring equipment

    Infection control

The Challenge Unit was designed to contain contagious diseases during a human challenge trial. The facility features 10 single isolation rooms, each equipped with HEPA-filtered exhaust air and negative pressure to prevent the spread of any viruses or bacteria.

  • a tv and storage in a hospital room

    Private rooms & amenities

Each participant in a challenge trial at CCfV will stay in their own private room in the Challenge Unit. Rooms are equipped with a TV, high-speed internet, a desk, and a mini-fridge for participant use. The rooms also feature an ensuite bathroom. Laundry and meal services are provided as well as extra toiletries.

  • nurses station in a hospital unit hallway

    On-site medical support

The Challenge Unit includes its own nurses’ station, where on-duty nurses monitor participant safety and comfort 24-7. Each room is set up with monitoring and diagnostic equipment to care for participants’ health.
