Human Challenge Trial Case Study: Pneumonia

Human challenge trials are a type of clinical research study where healthy, informed, consenting participants are safely exposed to a disease. Researchers are able to observe the progression of the illness and gain vital knowledge of how the human immune system responds. What they learn can then be used to develop or strengthen vaccines and treatments.

Modern-day human challenge trials have played a significant role in strengthening global knowledge of diseases, from colds to malaria.

Here’s how one challenge study helped improve our understanding of pneumonia.
