Challenge studies, also called Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIMs), are a type of clinical study where healthy, fully informed, consenting adults are intentionally and carefully exposed to a virus or bacteria in a controlled setting to learn more about disease and immunity. 

These studies take place in a specialized environment where participants are monitored around the clock by clinical staff and supported throughout their stay.
